Orthopaedic Service

The majority of initial Orthopaedic appointments within the Pennine MSK service are undertaken by Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists.

Orthopaedic Information

We see patients referred from their GP Practice with a variety of symptoms or conditions including, but not limited to, spinal pain, joint pain including osteoarthritis and soft tissue presentations (tendons, ligaments, muscles).

Your initial appointment focuses on your symptoms and how they are impacting your quality of life. A detailed history will be taken followed by a clinical examination. Specialist advice will be offered following assessment with regards to best management for your symptoms and you will be involved in this shared decision making process. This may involve an onward referral to other Primary Care Services such as to  Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy or to other Medical Specialities.  Where indicated, you may be referred for some further investigations following your assessment ,such as, X rays, Ultrasound Scans, MRI scans , Nerve Conduction Studies and blood tests. If these tests are arranged an appropriate follow up appointment will be made for you to discuss the results and the onward management plan with the clinician.

Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists within the service are able to offer a range of joint injections ( excluding spinal injections), where indicated.  If it is felt following your assessment that this may be a suitable treatment intervention this will be discussed with you further.

Appointments can be offered at the Integrated Care Centre ( ICC) or Royton Health and Wellbeing Centre. A smaller number of appointments are available at Failsworth Medical Centre.

Some patients are referred to an Orthopaedic Surgeon to consider surgical management options following the assessment process detailed above. We are fortunate within the Pennine MSK service to have a number of Orthopaedic Consultants who offer appointments at the ICC. If you require an appointment with an Orthopaedic Consultant the Specialist Physiotherapist will discuss with you which pathway is best for you and they will arrange the referral.
